Vitamins for the Soul -- March 28, 2005

Six Steps To A Better Marriage
By Zig Ziglar, adapted from "Courtship After Marriage"

Regardless of how good or bad our marriage has been, sometimes it's a
good idea to start all over with your mate. If your marriage is in
trouble, or you want to make it even better, you've got nothing to lose
by starting over.

Here are the six steps I think you should take: 1. Respect Your Mate.
Keep your mate informed by talking about the little things, as well as
the major things, that happen on a daily basis in your life.

2. Make Friends With Your Mate. Psychologists point out that in the
happiest and strongest marriages, the spouses play not only the roles of
lovers and partners, but best friends as well. As a marriage progresses,
the friendship will deepen and the marriage partners may become even
more like each other.

3. Build A Few Sand Castles. You can have more fun by planning more
activities with each other and with the entire family. Families of
long-term duration who are friends and have love and concern for one
another can have a grand time doing simple things, like building a sand
castle. The process of taking time to be together is a marvelous way to
build a solid foundation for a successful marriage.

4. Make The Commitment. Commitment means you are obligated to each
other. It also means you will seek reconciliation in the event there is
difficulty in your marriage. If you will look for reasons to stay
married, instead of reasons to part, you will find them, and you'll find
it easier to keep your commitment.

5. Rebuild The Foundation. I'm convinced that if the basic commitment
and the character foundation are there to build upon, every marriage can
be an enduring one. I emphasize character foundation, because as the
Blackfoot Indians say, "You can't carve rotten wood."

6. Become Partners For Life. Always help each other! Because it really
is true, you can have everything in life you want if you will just help
enough other people get what they want. When you get close enough and
stay close enough to help your mate, you really will be making a new
start.
