The Oath  Sam McGowan
 Dec 22, 2008 09:49 PST
Guys,

There is a new Email going around about the oaths taken by officers and enlisted men at the time of their commissioning and enlistment implying that they are enforce for as long as one is alive. This is not true, and anyone who served in the military should no better. The enlistment oath had to be repeated at each reenlistment because the oath is only good good for the specified term of the enlistment (although it could be extended) while an officer's oath is good only for as long as they hold their commission.

Incidentally, only the oath of enlistment has anything in it about obeying orders from the President of the US. The officer's oath has no such statement.
