I recently resigned from the board of a much smaller non-profit organization, the Boston Recorder Society, which exists to get people together to play recorders and other early instruments and to promote the recorder in the Boston area.
This is a much smaller and more localized organization, and the bylaws require electing new board members every year. Board members may remain as ex officio members at the end of their terms if they have a specific function to perform. Every year, some board members leave and some stay, and every year we need to twist quite a few arms to get enough new ones to satisfy the bylaws.
Aside from the fact that we are a small organization for whom having enough board members requires significant arm-twistage (and we don't have divisive elections because we never manage to have more candidates than positions), the general concensus is that if someone is really interested in helping out and participating in the running of the organization, we find a way for them to do that.
The point of all this is that in light of the venom, hard feelings, alleged irregularities, and strong disagreements about the way things should be run, I believe it would be of great benefit to the organization and an important step towards closing the rift if the BoD can find a meaningful way to engage the participation of the losing candidates. This could be the formal creation of an advisory board of some sort, the involvement of these individuals in committees, or some sort of less formal arrangement, but I think it is important that genuine efforts be made to engage their involvement.
Eight of the losing candidates received votes on over 10% of the ballots, and three of them received votes on over 30%. These are hardly majorities, but if this organization hopes to heal its wounds, they need to be recognized.

To those of you who voted for me, thank you. Since I was candidate and the interim treasurer of UMCA I recused myself from any public comments and discussion points raised by various people on this chat list. Now that the election is certified I can now make a few comments. Tthere is a lot of work to accomplish including but not limited to election of new officers, strategic planning, setting objectives for the coming year(s), looking at the constitution and by-laws and making any modifications that may be needed, reviewing some of the concerns raised in the past months, many of which have merit. I for one, hope to get some real work done during my one year term on the Board with the hope that the organization will again have respect of the ENTIRE ultracycling community. Wasn't it Rodney king who said something like, "can't we all try to get along"?

I just lost a one thousand dollar bet with my non cycling friend. He predicted
that all the candidates that were promoted in the famous "Lee Mitchell" letter
would win. At the time of the bet I laughed. It would be almost too convenient.
He reminded me again of the Colin Powell testimony in front of the United
Nations. My friend is 92 years young and wise to the ways of the world. He
stated that there is little shame in politics.
I am excited for the new board and anxiously await attending the next board
meeting. Congratulations, six for six, almost unbelievable.
I will be calling Lee Mitchell later today to see how he actually voted.
Speaking of phone calls, I was excited to read Fred's article in the current
magazine encouraging people to call each other directly. That being said, I am
eagerly awaiting phone calls from Nancy Guth and John Lee Ellis.
