many got directions to go to a website and sign up - that is different
than a yahoo invite..

You are free to join either one, both, or none. If someone deleted the
original e-mail of invitation, please send a note to Terry Brown, the

and he

The Executive Committee of the UMCA put together a communication plan in
the
interests of promoting full and open discussion of any and all issues .

while at the same time providing a forum dedicated to the discussion of
ultracycling.
I. Two complementary forums:
Last February we established the concept of two different domains for
discussion.
The town square is an important forum for discussion of whatever issues
the
subscribers wish to discuss. Free speech reigns. Anybody can walk into
the
square and talk about anything. UMCA politics, the e-mail chat lists,
ultracycling, RAAM, etc., etc. It's important to maintain this forum
and
the UMCA supports this forum.
Responding to requests from members we also established a second forum
where
the conversation is limited to ultracycling. Some members perceive that
the
first forum is dominated by political discussions without much
discussion of
the sport itself.
The town square is the Topica listserv
We set up the rec center on Google at: ultracy-@googlegroups.com
At my request Terry invited everyone on Topica to join the group. . . .
but
if someone starts talking politics we'll ask you to leave.
Currently the Google group has about 400 members and 464 open
invitations.
This is a forum where a person's political opinions truly don't matter.
As
long as someone wants to talk about ultracycling itself he or she is
welcome. For example, some candidates for the Board of Directors have
chosen to join the forum, e.g., Nick Gerlich, Mavis Irwin and Doug
Sloan;
others have chosen not to join.
II Migration to Yahoo
About six weeks ago people started complaining loudly about the Topica
service - slow posts, redundant posts, etc. I asked Terry Brown to set
up:
New Town square at Yahoo. We can still talk politics, ultracycling,
RAAM,
etc. However there are a couple of new limitations: no personal
attacks
and no offensive language. Terry sent everyone on Topica an
invititation to
join the new Town Square at Yahoo. Terry's also setting up access to the
Topica archives.
Why Yahoo? The recent thread on Topica shows the potential for
confusion
between the two different chat groups. . . and having both the Rec
Center
and the Town Hall on Google would be *very* confusing. We often say "I
read
. . " or "I posted . . ." on Topica. And we say the same about the rec
center "I read . . ." "I saw . . . " on Google. We'll keep the
distinction
clean by having the town square on Yahoo.
In sum:
The UMCA is committed to maintaining both forums because each serves a
legitimate purpose.
The new Town Square is open at:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ultracycling-talk
Topica will close on July 1.
The Rec Center is open at:
http://groups.google.com/group/ultracyclists?hl=en
All UMCA announcements will be posted to Google. If it seems
appropriate an
announcement may also be posted to Yahoo.
Everyone got an invitation to join the Rec Center at Google in February.
Everyone got an invitation to join the new Town Square at Yahoo in May.
You are free to join either one, both, or none. If someone deleted the

Thank you for your patience in the migration to Yahoo. The overall goal
is
to improve communications for the community.

John Hughes
