Fellow RAAMsters,
The book is closed on RAAM 2007 and plans are being made to begin
scouting a route for 2008 in a few weeks. Much of this starts by
putting together sections of previously used routes which have been well
received. If you were on the course this year, on a bike, in a crew, at
a time station, or as an official, your input would be invaluable in
deciding what parts of the 2007 route should be used again, even if not
next year.
Specifically I'm looking for places where riders or crews got lost and
whether the problem was related to unclear route book directions (e.g.,
incorrect distances/road signs not matching book information) or GPS
support. If GPS led you astray which receiver/software were you using?
In the old days RAAM was a race between public (pay) phones but now it
is more about mobile phone coverage. If you had trouble making time
station reports by cell phone please let me know where on the route and
what cell phone service you were using. Was the information in the
route book adequate to allow you to find a pay phone? I am curious if
folks from outside the US had trouble obtaining access here at
reasonable fees or if they tried the pay as you go systems with the
inexpensive "disposable" phones and if so whether they worked
satisfactorily.
Your help will be much appreciated. If you were in a support crew or
manning a time station please indicate the rider/time station name or
number in your reply.
Thanks,
Peter
