Heh. Funny how I can fire off an email and then think about the
subject. I don't want to suggest that IRC can easily be replaced by the
many proprietary messaging products. You can never get the level of
customization that IRC offers. (Choice of clients, scripting, ability to
write the whole thing from scratch if that isn't enough)
I think IRC will always be alive on smaller servers that are less appealing
targets or completely unknown by attackers. The problem with small servers
is the they seem to only be able to support very general interest groups or
an already strongly established group.
Maybe if there was a master directory of channels that listed a good
portion of IRC. Then there could be a fairly long list of choices
including very specialized interests.
