Botany Internship Opportunity
Zion National Park
Springdale, UT
Summer 2004
Position Title: BOTANICAL ASSISTANT
Major Duties: Assist Research Botanist in the verification
and documentation of botanical voucher specimens for 3
National Park units on the Colorado Plateau: Zion National
Park (ZION), Cedar Breaks National Monument and Pipe
Spring National Monument. Duties include transcribing
herbarium sheet label data and annotations into a National
Park Service standardized database. Work involves many
hours in the ZION herbarium transcribing by hand and on a
laptop computer (75% of time) alongside the Research
Botanist. Although at times tedious, the intern will work with a
skilled desert southwest/Colorado Plateau taxonomic
specialist offering opportunities to gain or improve plant
taxonomic skills and learn about herbarium management.
The intern will also assist the Research Botanist in
making field collections from the 3 parks and mounting
herbarium specimens. In addition, the intern will gain hands-
on experience with the highly motivated ZION Vegetation
Management staff in field projects (25% of time) involving
riparian restoration, native plant propagation, seed
collection, invasive weed management, and leading other
volunteers in the field.
Qualifications: Intern must have a familiarity with botanical
scientific names - and be detail-oriented. An interest in plant
taxonomy is essential.
Timeframe: Flexible according to internīs availability in the
months of May thru August 2004. 3 months
Benefits: Internship is available through the Student
Conservation Association (SCA) - see website for more

provided in ZION within walking distance of the workplace.
SCA provides intern with a $50 stipend per week for food,
transportation costs to and from ZION, and an educational
award (find out how much and insert) that can be applied to
university tuition or other future educational pursuits.
Work schedule: Monday - Thursday 10 hours/day (40 hrs
per week)
