Hi. Many times when you want to get information about something, in this
case maybe a chess clock or some other appliance, it is in a file with the
extension .PDF. You can download it to your computer and usually can be
read in something like Adobe Reader. Sometimes though, the Adobe can't
convert the image to text so you can't read the file with a screen reader.
The only way around that could be to download the PDF file and then print it
on your printer. Then you may be able to scan the pages you've printed into
an OCR program (optical character recognition) something like Open book.
Then you could get OPEN Book to convert it to a file you can read with the
screen reader. It's a round-about way to make a file accessible, but
sometimes it works and is the only way to do it. It's somewhat unbelievable
and ironic that this company is advertising something for visually impaired
people, yet it sounds like they don't know how to make their Adobe files
accessible. Oh well! Go figure!

If you can get the flyer, you could print the pdf format and then scan it
to
OCR. That may quench your curiosity. If you can't scan, you may send me
the PDF and I'll give it a shot. M.A.

Dear Toni,
Thank you so much for this direct link for the German company either
manufacturing the "adaptive" Chess Clock, or about ready to start
manufacturing it, I am afraid I am not sure, but will keep in touch with
them and try to get the answer we are both interested in!

I wonder whatever happened to the digital "Talking" Chess Clock the B.C.A.
was addressing?
I was hoping it was still in the works!
But I have not seen anything regarding this on their list lately!

With Very Best Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan,
The website of the company is

http://www.garde.de

You can select an English version of the site there.

The company promised to send me informations about the Braille chess
clock.
But I never received it. I had a few calls with the company, but they
always
told me the same: "You will get informations very soon".

I found a flyer about the clock on the website, but it is in a for
screenreaders unreadable PDF-format.

Best wishes
Toni

chess clocks
Dear Chess Friends,
Can any provide more information on this subject of the Chess Clocks for
Blind which I just received a message about from my good friend Stephen
Hilton of Scotland?

He writes:

"There is a company in Germany called Garde who have started to produce
Braille chess clocks and they are selling at 79 Euros per clock."

Any additional information about this company would be greatly
appreciated, I simply could not find them on the net!

I fear my old RNIB Chess Clock has had it, one side will just not run
properly!

With Best Regards,

Alan
