FWIW, I think I'll stay w/ 53x39/42.
I usually train w/ 53x39 and a 13-26 8 spd(yes 8sp!). For races I'll
put on a 12-25 and I can ride pretty much anything around here. People
have mentioned cons of spinning out and too large a tooth differential
in the front. A few people have said the compact is good for training
but that they wouldn't race with it. I race & train w/ the same bike
and none of the pros for the compact are really compelling enough to
make me switch.

I like the compact cranks. The only downside is downshifting the
chainrings under a bit of pressure, e.g. on hills, in races or on very
hard rides. The chain tends to derail in those circumstances, since the
16-tooth gap between the 50 and 34 is just a little too long for
flawless shifting. This is easily remedied by a Deda Dog Fang or a
Third Eye Chain Watcher, and Redline makes a nice one too but I can't
recall the name. These plastic guides are $5-$10, fasten onto the
downtube with a hose clamp (basically) and remedy the problem
effectively, once you have them dialed in. I really like my compact
cranks.

Nice for a commuting or cyclocross bike, easier on your knees if you
climb lots of hills. Can be nice for criteriums with lots of slowdowns
where you can tend to be overgeared in the big ring. Lots of people make
11-25 cassettes now...
Main cons are they put you in a smaller cog when you are going fast.
Smaller cogs are less efficient, because the chain has less contact
area. Also the chain/drivetrain will wear out faster because of the
smaller front rings.
I have one on my cross/commuting bike and like it but run regular cranks
on my race bike.
