-------------------=0ANine Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions in five l=
ocations (EPFL, TU Berlin, Technion, FORTH, and U Rennes I) are funded by t=
he European Commission under the Marie Curie Initial Training Network Progr=
am (project TransForm).=0A=0AWe address (pre-PhD) researchers aiming at sig=
nificantly improving their career perspectives from both the public and pri=
vate sector.=0A=0AThe duration of the appointment is 3 years, with a possib=
ility of extension funded from other sources. =0A=0ARESEARCH TOPIC=0A=0ATh=
e ESRs will pursue research on the general area of concurrent computing and=
in particular on the theoretical foundations of transactional memory.=0A=
=0AMulticore architectures have come to stay; yet multicore is useless with=
out concurrent programming. The current parallel programming approach of em=
ploying locks is widely considered to be too difficult for any but a few e=
xperts. Transactional Memory (TM) is a new programming paradigm which is co=
nsidered by many researchers as the future of parallel programming. To unde=
rstand properly TM systems as well as be able to assess them and improve t=
hem, a rigorous theoretical study of the approach, its challenges and its b=
enefits is badly needed.=0A=0AThis is the challenging research goal to be u=
ndertaken by the recruited ESRs.=0A=0AEach recruited ESR will primarily wor=
k with one of the academic partners of the project:=0A=0A * Swiss Institu=
te of Technology in Lausanne(EPFL), Switzerland (Prof.=0ARachid Guerraoui)=
=0A * Technical University of Berlin, Germany (Prof. Anja Feldman & Dr. P=
etr=0AKuznetsov)=0A * Technion, Department of Computer Science, Israel (P=
rof. Hagit Attiya)=0A * FORTH, Heraklion, Greece (Prof. Panagiota Fatouro=
u)=0A * University of Rennes I, France (Prof. Michel Raynal)=0A=0Aand und=
er the supervision of researchers from the industry:=0A=0A * Deutsche Tel=
ekom Laboratories, Germany (Prof. Dr. Anja Feldman & Dr.=0APetr Kuznetsov)=
=0A * Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK (Dr. Tim Harris)=0A * Sun Micro=
systems Labs, Massachusetts, USA (Dr. Victor Luchangco)=0A * IBM T.J. Wat=
son Research Center, USA (Dr. Maged Michael and Dr. Eran=0AYahav).=0A=0AELI=
GIBILITY=0A=0AThe recruited researchers should be, at the time of selection=
, in the first four years of their research careers (measured from the date=
when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark =
on a doctorate). Also:=0A=0A * ESR should not already have a PhD=0A * E=
SR should be nationals of a country other than the country of her/his=0Apri=
mary academic partner, and=0A * ESR must not have resided or carried out =
her/his main activity (work,=0Astudies, etc.) in the country of her/his pr=
imary academic partner for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.=0A=0AEL=
IGIBILITY EXAMPLES=0A=0AExample A:=0AA researcher has already been working =
as a researcher in industry for two years since graduating with his/her fir=
st degree in computer science. S/he would be able to benefit from participa=
tion in an ITN as an ESR even without pursuing a PhD degree.=0A=0AExample B=
:=0AA researcher has graduated with his/her MSc degree in computer science =
in=0A2007 and would like to start his/her PhD studies in 2010. S/he is elig=
ible as an ESR within the ITN as s/he has less than 4 years of research exp=
erience and no PhD.=0A=0AExample C:=0AA researcher obtained his/her PhD aft=
er 3 =BD years. S/he is not eligible as an ESR within an ITN even though s/=
he has less than 4 years of research experience.=0A=0A=0AIMPORTANT DATES=0A=
=0AThere are two cut-off dates:=0A=0A1) 1st Cut-off date: November 15, 2009=
=0A Expected starting date: January 1, 2010=0A =0A2) 2nd Cut-off dat=
e: March 31, 2010=0A Expected starting date: October 1, 2010=0A=0APr=
iority will be given to applicants that can join the project in early 2010.=
=0AApplicants should send an e-mail of interest to the contact person at th=
e academic partner of their choice (EPFL, TU Berlin, Technion, FORTH, or U=
Rennes I):=0A=0A*=09EPFL: Prof. Rachid Guerraoui, rachid.guerraoui AT epfl=

ROVISIONS=0A=0AMarie Curie ITNs provide competitive financial support to th=
e ESRs including:=0A=0A * a fair monthly living and mobility allowance=0A=
* a yearly travel allowance (i.e., a fixed amount of money based upon th=
e direct distance between the location of origin of the researcher and the =
chosen institution)=0A * a career exploratory allowance (i.e., a single =
payment for attending =0Ajob interviews, additional courses, job fairs, etc=
.) and=0A * coverage of the expenses related to the participation of the=
ESRs in=0Aresearch and training activities (contribution to research-relat=
ed costs, meetings, conference attendance, training actions, etc.).=0A
