3: SMILE!
An old Sailor and an old Marine were sitting at the VFW arguing about
who'd had the tougher career.
"I did 30 years in the Corps," the Marine declared proudly, "and fought
in three of my country's wars. Fresh out of boot camp, I hit the beach
at Okinawa, clawed my way up the blood-soaked sand, and eventually took
out an entire enemy machine gun nest with a single grenade. As a
sergeant, I fought in Korea a longside General MacArthur. We pushed
back the enemy inch by bloody inch,
all the way up to the Chinese border, always under a barrage of
artillery and small arms fire. Finally, as a Gunny Sergeant, I did
three consecutive combat tours in Vietnam. We humped through the mud
and razor grass for 14 hours a day, plagued by rain and mosquitoes,
ducking under sniper fire all day, and mortar fire all night. In a
firefight, we'd fire until our arms ached and our guns were empty, then
we'd charge the enemy with bayonets!"
"Ah," said the Sailor with a dismissive wave of his hand, "lucky
bastard! All shore duty, huh?"

4. DRAWING
Each month until the reuinon will be having a drawing from those that
have sent in their reunion registration.
This month's winner will receive the Command Histories 1964-1985.
And the lucky winner pulled from the official "MoBoat" ballcap by my
lovely wife, Maria, is:
Plankowner BT2 David Clifford.
Congratulations David! We'll get that Book off to you ASAP.
If you are planning to attend the reunion in Branson in August '07,
be sure to get those reunion registrations in early to be eligible for
all the monthly drawings preceding the reunion.

6. TREES BRING HOLIDAY SPIRIT TO USS DUBUQUE
MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- The holiday season kicked off aboard USS
Dubuque (LPD 8) with the delivery of three live Christmas trees Nov. 28
donated by the Christmas Spirit Foundation via the Trees for Troops
Program. The trees were donated by tree farmers from across the United
States.
The holiday delivery is the first of numerous scheduled deliveries that
will ultimately ship more than 100 Christmas trees to service members
stationed throughout the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command’s (NAVCENT)
area of responsibility (AOR). This AOR is a 7.5 million square-mile
region that is the home to more than 13,000 Sailors serving in support
of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom,
as well as maritime security operations (MSO).
The Dubuque delivery was coordinated locally by NAVCENT’s chaplain's
staff, which delivered the three fresh evergreen trees. The trees
arrived in boxes to help ensure the tree’s limbs stayed intact during
the lengthy shipment from the United States to the Middle Eastern
region.
“It really means a lot to this crew,” said Dubuque Command Chaplain, Lt.
Rodney Weaver, as he separated the branches of a fresh evergreen. “It
brightens our spirits; having a live tree aboard just adds a little
something more.”
Weaver added that everyone would have a chance to help decorate the
trees, which would be displayed in different common areas located aboard
the ship.
NAVCENT Chief Religious Program Specialist Eddie Walker, who coordinated
the shipboard delivery, said the trees will help give Dubuque Sailors a
little slice of home.
“They’re here on deployment without their families,” he said. “This is a
way to keep everyone’s spirits up, and remind each other that other
service members are also part of our family.”
Dubuque left her homeport of Norfolk, Va., Oct. 3, for a scheduled
six-month deployment and is currently in the region conducting MSO.
MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime
environment, as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security
efforts of regional nations.
These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime
environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or
other material.

7. ALL HANDS MAGAZINE
Magazine of the U.S. Navy
The first "issue" of All Hands was printed as the Bureau of Navigation
News Bulletin No. 1 (dated Aug. 30, 1922). Twenty years later, the title
was changed to Bureau of Naval Personnel
Information Bulletin. As America claimed "Victory in Europe" on the
cover of June 1945, the magazine's new banner read, All Hands, and the
name stuck.
The Navy believes it's important to make the Navy's history, as
documented in All Hands, accessible to everyone. In January 2003, we
completed a two-year project to archive every back issue (more than 80
years worth) in Adobe Acrobat® format. Since June 2002, every
new issue is being offered in both Adobe Acrobat® format and the
interactive Macromedia Flash® format.
Please note that the Acrobat files are saved at 150 dpi to ensure
acceptable print quality.
While this results in a slightly larger file size than that required for
Web-only viewing, we believe this is a better option for archival
purposes.

8. FINDING FORMER SHIPMATES
The reunion is getting closer and will be here before you know it.
Wouldn't it be great if your ol' friends could join you in Branson? Here
are a few places to look for your friends.
http://www.intelius.com – Free searches on this site return full name,
city, state, approximate age, and names of others living in the same
household. Search criteria include the middle initial, which is very
helpful in finding the person you are looking for. Intelius is very
useful for zeroing in on possible locations of the target individuals,
who can be more precisely located at no charge by using whitepages.com
or similar people finders.
http://whitepages.com – Free searches return names, addresses and phone
numbers, but no information on age or other household members. Search
criteria can include city and ZIP code if you know them. Free reverse
searches are available for telephone numbers and addresses. If your
target’s name is reasonably uncommon, and/or if you are fairly sure
where he lives, this is a very good site for finding him. We have used
it extensively for finding shipmates, often after zeroing in on them
through Intelius or U.S. Search.
http://www.ussearch.com – Search criteria include the middle initial.
Here are partial results of a free search for Louis F. Sander. We’ve
used the age (in the third column) to identify likely
candidates from the search results, then used www.whitepages.com to find
them.
http://www.zabasearch.com – Search is by name and optionally by state.
Results of free searches include name, address, and sometimes phone
number and approximate age. This is a fairly new people finder, and it
is very easy to use. It’s often the first people finder we try when
looking for a single shipmate.
For even more information on find your old shipmates, try this PDF that
is full of ideas on how to find them.

the product.
=====================================
12. GETTING THE WORD OUT
As you can tell from our log-in count, shipmates are still finding our
website.
But, just advertising our reunion in veteran's magazines may not be good
enough.
One way to get the word out is contacting former shipmates yourself if
you know where they are. The other is placing a classified ad to
advertize our reunion and website in your home town newspaper or the
biggest city close to you.
If we all would do this simple thing, The entire country would be
covered.
