3: THANK YOU
I owe a big thank you to MM3 James Campbell, 1961-1963. James has been
assisting me with contacting former shipmates from the National
Archive's microfilm. I've transposed the names that I could read and
I've placed them in an Excell database. James looks for those men using
his many years of experience in his geneology work.
THANK YOU!

4. DRAWING
Each month until the reuinon will be having a drawing from those that
have sent in their reunion registration and have current dues paid.
This month's winner will receive a MoBoat Ball Cap.
And the lucky winner pulled from the official "MoBoat" ballcap by my
lovely wife, Maria, is:
SN Lawrence Osborne, 1960-1963
Congratulations Lawrence! We'll get that MoBoat Ball Cap off to you
ASAP.
If you are planning to attend the reunion in Branson in August '07,
be sure to get those reunion registrations in ASAP to be eligible for
the final monthly drawing in July.

5. WEBSITE OF THE MONTH
Genealogists are some of the most resourceful people I’ve met.
Maybe that’s because they’re so driven by their hobby.
They know where to look for information, and they often find it.
Of course, the Internet has made it easier for genealogists to
find information.
You can get genealogy tips online. Or, you can create a Web page
requesting information on someone in your family.
But perhaps the biggest boon to genealogy is the creation of
online databases. Take, for example, Ancestry.com. It has just
created a database of U.S. military records. It spans the Civil
War to the Vietnam War. It even includes records from Iraq.
You can search the database for documents such as draft
registration cards and casualty listings. It is a treasure
trove for any genealogist.
Search the database for free until June 6, D-Day.

6. NATIONAL ARCHIVES
The contractor I hired to covert the microfilm reels gave me more bad
news last week. He said the his company was unable to convert any of
the files from the national Archives.
It seems funny that I was able to read most of the documents at the
library and this company the specializes in microfilm cannot.
I'm looking for another contactor.

8. USS NEW YORK
It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.
It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that
include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of
360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by
helicopters and assault craft.
Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite,
LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on
Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total
reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there.
"It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."
Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade
center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair
on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us,"
he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going
to be back."
The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

9. EMAIL ABOUT THE REUNION
If for no other reason I would like to be there to thank Beamer for all
the work he has done to make this work.
I would like to see Bob Mosher, Don Kuepker (Warrick RI), Lacy Pike
(Sacramento Calif), Bill Cassell Scottsdale Ariz), Ted Reardon (Calif),
Chuck The Man Dougherty (Wash DC), Ruben the Rod man, George the Man
Mitchell, and esp Mr Ron Harben. There are a few more but I am too late
- Their gone.
These Sailors are all on the list. Did Pike, Cassell, and Swatek ever
shut down that bar in Yokuska, 1965, one night. The last thing I
remember was??
Any Sailor who served on the MoBoat should be there - No Excuse!
Who served on the MoBoat the most years - 6 years. Who can beat that?
Can anyone name him?
When is the last time YOU saw the MoBoat - Standing on the hill near the
Bay in 2002 looking down on the Big ole Boat calling Pike and I for one
last WesPac.
Liberty Calls Us - What is five days over the last 40 years? Lets show a
little respect for those we served with and those Sailors serving Our
Country Now.
They are all Volunteers. There is no draft after them. They Love the
USA!
If I can make it there, all of us can make it there! PS, My wife gave me
permission.
If anybody knows where Phylis Phid is bring her along. She was hot -
as quoted by Captain Folta.
The Special Services VW bus will be there to takes us back from the main
Gate.
Commander Draz will be the driver.
Ltjg James Swatek, 1965-1967

10. EXCELL DATABASE
I've placed the Excell database of crew lists on the Deck Log page.
These are the
names of all the crew members for each year that is posted.
I currently have lists from 1959, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1968 and 1970.
There will be more years added as time allows.
If you are a paid member of USSMONTICELLO.COM - write or call me for a
password.
Crew members that have not paid dues will be denied access.
If you do not have the Microsoft Excell software, you can download a
free reader here:

11. NAVY AWARDS
Have you ever wondered what awards the MoBoat won while you were aboard?
This is the Navy's Awards website. It has information on
unit award and information on how to apply for awards you may be
missing.
Check out this website: https://awards.navy.mil/
Just do a query for unit awards and type in MONTICELLO.
Below are the results I just executed. It's missing entries from the
1980's that it gave me earlier this week. So, be sure to check it a
few times before you give up.
Also, the abbreviations for each award is explained, i.e., AE is
the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
