1: WHAT'S NEW?

At last count, 589 crewmembers have signed into the online Deck Log.

We have had almost 25,000 visitors to our homepage. That's a lot of
folks browsing your photos, videos and ship's history. The main reason
that the website was built was that the ship's history could be shared
with anyone that wanted to read about her and that our ship may never be
forgotten.

=====================================
2: 2009 REUNION!

The 2009 reunion is to be held in Branson and the Branson Grand Plaza
Hotel.

To have the banquet room and hospitality room given to us at no cost, we
need to book at least 30 rooms per night.

Many of you have told me that there are cheaper rooms in the Branson
area, but unfortunately that doesn't do the reunion group much good if
we aren't centrally located at the guest hotel. We need to take
advantage of the "group rate" and free breakfasts and 10% lunch discount
offered by the Branson Grand Plaza.

Be sure to send in your reunion registration forms as soon as you
can. There is no other way to determine how many shipmates will be in
attendance.

I am sending out an updated crew's list. Call your friends on the list
to see if they are planning to attend this year's get-together in
Branson.

The dates of the reunion are 16 - 19 September. Remember that the
banquet will be held on the evening of the 19th.

3: Photos, Movies & News aticles

We're still looking for more photos & movies to place on the website.
Break out those old photos, 8mm movies, vhs and DVDs send them in to be
shared with all of our members.

=====================================
4. HAVE YOU CALLED YOUR NAVY BUDDY?

A lot of time and effort has gone into producing the crew's members list
you have been sent. Now it's time to use it and call someone you knew
"back then" and ask them if they are planning on attending this year's
reunion.

There is no time like the present. Don't put it off any longer.

=====================================
5. WEBSITE OF THE MONTH

www.socialsecurity.gov

Retirement is nearing for millions of baby boomers.
Maybe you are planning on retiring soon.

Who could argue that retiring is a bad thing?
I certainly wouldn't. You've put in your time
"working for the man." Now you deserve to reap the
rewards of it.

But the folks at the Social Security Administration
see things differently.

It's not that they don't want baby boomers to retire.
It's just that the administration can't handle all
the paperwork! So, it has added a great new feature
to its site.

You can now apply for your Social Security benefits
online. In most cases, that should take about 15 minutes.
And you probably won't have additional paperwork to file.

Of course, there are other great resources on the
Social Security Administration's site. You can request
a Social Security card. Or, learn about your Social S
ecurity earnings statement.

Do you know someone who will retire soon? Forward
this e-mail to them now. They'll thank you for it!

7. ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM

The U.S. Naval Institute's Oral History program captures and preserves
the reminiscences of key Navy and Coast Guard personnel. The Institute
tape-records a series of interviews covering the life story of each
participant. The interviews are then transcribed, annotated, indexed,
and bound.

Since the inception of the program in 1969, more than 230 bound volumes
have been completed, and interviews have been recorded to produce dozens
more.

Amphibious Squadron sets Sail for Far East

Sis ships of the amphibious Squadron Five under the command of Capt.
M.A. Shellbarger sailed Tuesday for the western Pacific as relief for
Amphibious Squadron One, currently serving with the U.S. Seventh Fleet.

The attack transport Paul Revere, commanded by Capt. A. R. Olsen, and
the dock landing ship Monticello, under the command of Comdr. D. Bryan,
Jr., departed San Diego Nov 14 en route direct to the Western Pacific.

Setting her course direct for the Western Pacific also, the attack
transport Magoffin, commanded by Capt. J. M. Robertson, sailed Saturday.

The remaining ships, the attack transport Calvert, attack cargo ships
Seminole and Skagit, and landing dock ships Oak Hill, Catamount and Fort
Marion left here Tuesday for the Western Pacific via Pearl Harbor.

Four of the ships, Oak Hill, Skagit, Calvert and Magoffin are carrying
"Operation Handclasp" materials for orphanages, missionaries and the
needy in the Far East.

In addition to food, medical supplies and clothing, a jeep, a pick-up
truck and a sedan will be transported.

The Calvert will transport part of her Handclasp material to the Little
Flower Orphanage in Pohang, Korea. The Paul Revere will deliver a
portion of her cargo to orphans in Okinawa.

The squadron will serve an eith month tour of duty with the U.S. Seventh
Fleet, and the returning Amphibious Squadron One will arrive in San
diego in mid-December.

9. ANOTHER COLLISION AN EARLIER TIME

2 Navy Ships Damaged In Pacific Collision

Two Navy ships out of San Diego were damaged 100 miles west of San Diego
during an underway refuling operation, Pacific Fleet Amphibious Force
headquarters said yesterday.

The navy said there were no injuries aboard the attack tranport Paul
Revere and the landing ship dock Monticello, which came together Monday
while refueling in a following sea.

Both ships left San Diego Nov 14 for a regular deployment with the 7th
Fleet in the Western Pacific. They continued as scheduled after the
accident.

Four landing craft, their davits, the 60-ton cargo boom and lifelines
were damaged aboard the Paul Revere. Damage to the Monticello was minor.

The Monticello moved into the Paul Revere when her rudder response was
reduced by the following sea, the Navy said. It was explained the the
Paul Revere, the heavier ship, could hold her position better as the two
ships steamed side-by-side during the operation.

10. HUMOR

Some time ago an old sailor retired from the sea. Reaching home, he
asked his two blonde daughters for one favor, that being a proper burial
at sea when the time came.

The old sailor eventually died and daughters Barbie and Barbara went
out, bought a canvas sail and sea twine to sew a shroud and prepare him
for burial at sea.

They took their father to a boat and the two of them rowed and rowed
until Barbie asked Barbara, "Are we deep enough?"

Barbara jumped over the side and the water was just to her knees, and
she said, "No."

They rowed some more, and Barbara jumped in to find the water up to her
chest, so she got back in.

The third time they rowed and rowed and then rowed some more.

"Are we deep enough yet?" Barbie asked.

This time when Barbara jumped over the side she disappeared beneath the
water and Barbie looked over wondering if she'd drowned when all she saw
were bubbles coming up.

Then, with a mighty splash, Barbara exploded from the water and grabbing
the side of the boat yelled triumphantly to Barbie, "YES! We're deep
enough!

Hand me the shovel."
