Fellows Divers and Explorers:

I live in Portugal (that’s in, next to Spain) and we have a lot of
work to do relating nautical archaeology. As you all might know,
during the
discoveries period (XIV – XVIII centuries) a lot of Portuguese
ships sunk
all over the world, but also in our coast line and Madeira and Azores.
I am now working in a study relating the laws of nautical and sub
aquatic archaeology, and I miss what is going on on the States.
Can anyone
please tell me if there are any federal laws to preserve and
protect ancient
ships and their cargo and artefacts?
In Portugal the law is very restrictive: whatever you find belongs
to the State, which pays to the discover the “commercial” value of
the find.
But only the national entities (CNANS) can excavate places and
give specific
permits to do that.
Can somebody help me on the USA laws?

Best Regards and good Dives,

Carlos Henriques Antunes
