Finally back after ten days of superb dives in
the Southwest Walls in Puerto Rico and some
baseline survey to select a site to scuttle a
vessel in the deep western waters of the
island. Thanks to Barney for his speedy and
useful response for my request for info on
NOAA's guidelines for artificial reefs. We now
have the governmental machinery (sorry, but
it was unavoidable) cranking in search of
vessels to sink as deep platforms for technical
training. Two of our Accomplices in the island
just completed their IANTD Instructor Trainers
Course and Trimix Instructor Course. They will
be pushing to get this training site going and
useful.
...
The western part of the island is famous for its
deep walls, some even reachable off the beach.
In the southwest wall, we were mesmerized
by the abundance of large black coral "trees"
as shallow as 180 fsw / 51 msw. Didn't get to
see a humpback whale or her calf as last year,
but the coral "forest" was definitely impressive.
By the end of next week we'll have our accounts
of the dives made in Parguera and Aguadilla
set up in our web site with address below.
