Honorable Mention
The office of Public Advocate is a position the Sun would have advocated
abolishing--that is, until a dentist from Queens, Jay Golub, visited
their offices. Another candidate who visited the Sun's offices is the
Libertarian Party's James Lesczynski. He is running on the platform of
abolishing the office he refers to as “New York City's equivalent of the
queen of England.” He promised the Sun, “if elected on the first day I
would fire the staff, padlock the office, and refuse to take the
salary.” He would then tell the City Council to “return the money to the
taxpayers.”

Principals Without Principles, Part 1
The Queens assistant principal who forced a dozen Haitian students to
eat their lunch off the cafeteria floor while calling them "animals,"
has been demoted, the Daily News has learned. Nancy Miller, the former
assistant principal at Public School 34 in Queens Village, was bounced
to the job title of "teacher" while the city continues its bid to fire
her, said Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg. The
spokeswoman could not specify how much of a pay cut Miller has taken,
but stressed that Miller is not assigned to classroom duties. School
investigators confirmed allegations that Miller responded to a scuffle
in the cafeteria between two fourth-graders by forcing 12 students to
eat chicken and rice on the floor with their hands.

Principals Without Principles, Part 2
The principal of one of the city's most respected public high schools
has been ousted for urging parents to lie in order to milk the National
School Lunch Program for extra cash. Maurice Collins, the principal of
A. Philip Randolph HS in Harlem, also threatened to withhold
transportation for children whose parents didn't turn in their
school-lunch applications. The food firestorm started when Collins sent
parents a letter urging them to lie about their wealth on the lunch
applications — telling them that doing so would boost the school's
budget. "The lower you estimate your income, the better for the school
budget," Collins, 44, wrote in a letter obtained by The Post. "If you
work more than one job, only put down the income from one job on the
form."

The Government Takes Care of Us?

by John Ragsdale

Those who want the US government to take care of them (Senator Clinton
comes to mind) need to take a really good look at what is happening down
south with a major hurricane doing real damage to the gulf coast.

When it takes five days of starving and dying of our citizens for real
help to come, do you want the same folks taking care of your basic
needs? Is this the way to handle REAL emergencies? Oh, they didn't have
"weapons of mass destruction" maybe. That would have gotten troops there
fast. Haven't I been taught that the government’s basic job is to
protect its citizens?

Oh, have you noticed that New Orleans can have lots of lawlessness, and
finally get some help. Mississippi, on the other hand, can wait
patiently with the same starving and dying but not shoot and rape so
many people, and guess what? The press just says "what a shame" and
keeps the cameras pointing at New Orleans.

Of course now it's said to be a racial thing. You know the poor blacks
are being shunned by the Feds. Maybe so, but the hurricane wasn't the
main culprit. The LEVIES broke a day later. What, New Orleans government
(mostly black, by the way) didn't keep them maintained? This is also
state and federal government shirking duty. The government really took
care of the people.

Even though for the most part, I believe in Libertarian principles, I
believe we can't wait for the years necessary to get the Libertarians
into office. I propose that next election we have an instant and
bloodless revolution. All we have to do is to vote every incumbent on
the ballot out. Nationwide, this would create a new government with the
exception of the senate. Guess what, the new guys, no matter how corrupt
and rotten, would ask what the people want. They might even let the
lobbyists sit in the lobby and talk to the constituents from back home
instead. The government of the people would be just that.

It’s either this or keep letting the government take care of us so well.
