* News Bites *

Poor Bingo
He has already snuffed out your right to smoke in bars — and now Mayor
Bloomberg is trying to shame you from lighting up in your own home, by
dragging cats and dogs into the debate. City Hall has issued a warning
that secondhand smoke endangers the health of puffers' pets. That's
right. Even if you don't have a spouse or kids to worry about, that next
smoke could push Fido, Sylvester or Tweetie one step closer to the pet
cemetery, the city Health Department declares in its new advisory. "Even
cats and dogs whose owners smoke have higher rates of cancer," the
Health Department reports.

Long Time for Wine
New Yorkers with a taste for California syrahs or the latest Willamette
pinot from Oregon were heartened by the State Legislature's decision
last summer allowing them to buy these and other out-of-state wines
directly, either through the Internet or over the phone. But as the
holiday season nears, wine lovers have bumped up against the
bureaucratic ways of New York State, whose agencies - as of Thursday
night at least - have yet to carry through on the law and allow shipping
companies to actually deliver wine to New York from other states.

Gay Rites Reversed
Yesterday, a New York appeals court ruled that gay couples have no right
to marry under the state's constitution, saying the right of society to
favor heterosexual relationships outweighs the right of individuals to
choose whom they will marry. The 4-1 decision in Hernandez v. Robles was
a crushing blow for same-sex couples, who'd seen their right to marry
stated so clearly in a Manhattan court in February.

* Rant of the Week *

Gun Obstacle Course

by Dennis P. Farley

Recently a friend and I went to a local firearms dealer in Ozone Park to
find out what the process for purchasing a firearm would require, after
reading the rant about the sorry situations that developed in New
Orleans during the flood. We are not firearms enthusiasts, but have had
some exposure through friends and relatives, but have never owned any
(living in New York City), so we asked the people at the facility for
information about purchasing and permitting etc.

The owner was very helpful and was also very candid about the procedure,
the net effect being that in New York city to legally purchase a firearm
it will take about a year from the time that you apply and cost you
about two thousand dollars for a new firearm (pistol valued at about
$750.00). This place has a range and sells quality arms (most of the
patrons were Law Enforcement personnel) and the owner said he had some
nice used equipment, but the costs were mostly connected with the
paperwork searches and legal fees. The initial costs for long arms were
much the same, and the kind of long arms available to NYC residents are
limited to things with magazine capacities of five rounds or less.

Things like this are enough to make anyone except a die-hard enthusiast
just give up on the thought of having any means to legally defend
themselves. This seems to be a sad situation given the continuing
decrease in the government’s credibility in controlling anything except
the “Law Abiding Citizen”.
