C H A P T E R   !
Last weekend I did the Armadillo Hill Country Classic.

A few miles into the ride I found myself next to an older guy who
didn't look terribly fit, but was holding his own with a fairly clean
riding style. I introduced myself as Frank and asked him his name. He
said it was Mike. That was that until a few minutes later when he asked
me my last name. I told him and then he said he was Mike McGouirk. Many
of you may recall that 10 years ago Mike was one of the strongest (and
often controversial) 35+ riders in Texas, then he disappeared from the
racing scene w/o a trace. Well, he's back. He needs to take off a few
pounds but not that many. His kids are growing up and it's just
possible we'll see him in the races again.

Yesterday I did the Austin Tricyclists ride. As usual it began to shred
fairly quickly once the speed picked up on Southwest Parkway. A couple
times I found myself behind a REALLY BIG dude who I had never seen
before. His jersey would cover a whole city block. I didn't want to get
caught behind this guy on the climbs so I kept moving around him. Later
on a fast descent he zoomed to the front. Amazingly, when we got onto
620 he was still in the group. Suddenly he turned to me and said, "Hi,
I'm John Soberhed." Many of you will remember John as a perennial racer
in the 80's and 90's. He was a big dude even then although not as large
as now. He has thighs as big as my waist. On a flat crit riding behind
him it was like motorpacing. Then he disappeared to raise kids as well.
He tells me he's on the comeback trail and may start racing again. I
told him to join Violet Crown.

Does anyone have the email address for the guy at today's Freewheeling
ride in the T-Mobile champions jersey? I believe his name is Paul (?).

Later,
