Hi Dan! How are you?
I am a big fan of your 22 Advantages of Street Trees.? But I have trouble
backing up the claim of $90,000.
The link below, from Casey Trees, puts it at closer to $3000. ($100 per year)
Can you help me to believe?

Jeff ....
My reference for the $90,000 (meant to be the life-long contribution of an
average urban street tree) is taken from a quote in the book, Trees in Urban Design by
Hery F. Arnold. Top landscape architects tell me this book is the most authoritative
reference?on the topic. We can let Casey and Arnold get into a fisticuffs, and settle
it once and for all ... but until we declare a winner, I will stick by Arnold.
The quote (page 150-151) is from a? U.S. Forest Service study in 1985, where
they arrived at a value of $57,500 for a 50 year old tree over a 50 year period
of time.? This figure does not include intangible values, and therefore must
understate the value (like to birds, squirrels, children?who like to climb,
young romantic couples trying to sneak away from urban lights).
I updated the values to the current inflated dollar.?? The same pages (150-151)
cite annual maintenance costs for an urban street tree at $11.
You should be amazed, not that I based my figure on an actual study, but that I
found the book in only a two minute search of my office.? I am impressed.
Yes, doing well. Just got back from a nine day gig in the deep and remote
hinterlands of Alaska, and getting paid by a small Indian nation to do this.
Life is sweet.
