Subject: Walkable Communities Virtual Event, Dan Burden live, 9-11-09

Everybody... Ready for release... Dan's first webinar is just weeks away,

now ready for signups.  Please spread the word widely among your friends,

associates, and especially your listserves and clients.

Release is ready to go (see below). We would like to get as broad and diverse

an audience as we can. If we are successful with this first model session we

hope to expand this effort to a walkable, livable, community design series

(with a multiple set of speakers) in a low-cost series next year.  There will

be a lot of content in this "opener" that everyone should find of significant

benefit. One of our goals in attracting many "viewers" is to receive their

feedback on what is important to them... so that we can perfect the content

of future webinars.

All right, everyone... on your marks, get set... go!!! (sound of a pop-gun going

off)

Walkable Communities: Achieving Community Goals Through Strategic Community

Design

Dan Burden, Live & On-Line

September 11, 3:00-4:30 PM Eastern, 12:00-1:30PM Pacific

Take part live from your office, no matter where you are. No travel req
uired.

Presenter: Dan Burden, long-time national leader on Walkable Communities,

co-founder of Walkable Communities Inc. and senior urban designer with Glatting

Jackson, with these other distinctions:

•  Time Magazine recently listed Dan as “one of the six most important

civic innovators i n the world”

•  Transportation Research Board (National Academy of Sciences) honored

Dan by selecting him as their Distinguished Lecturer in 2001

•   The national Smart Growth Coalition awarded Dan its first “Lifetime

Achievement Award”

•  League of American Bicyclists lists Dan as “One of the 25 Most

Significant Leaders in Bicycling for the Past 100 Years”

Summary: This interactive session on the walkability, sustainability, health and

eco nomic vitality of communities will take participants back in time to the era

when communities were built to be efficient, socially engaging, socially

interactive, lively, dynamic centers. The towns we now love best, are designed

in similar ways… around healthy, human-scaled environments and transportation

(feet, transit and bicycles).

This program will provide a highly visual look at the definition and nature of

small, medium-sized and large-scale walkable neighborhoods, towns and cities.

Dan will share what he refers to as the "prosperity model" that can help get our

economy out of its slump, at the neighborhood level, boosting
home values 30,000

to 180,000 dollars per property, if neighborhoods are correctly built to honor

town making principles.

These critical principles will be illustrated, enriched with definitive detail

and wide range of examples. Once a foundation is built for walkability, using

strategically chosen patterns, measures and techniques, the stage is set for a

healthy, socially and economically dynamic place. Dan will provide four case

studies... from small towns, to mall-to-town conversions and discussion of how

the issues are dealt with in larger regional context. These "best case" studies

will represent all regions of the U.S.

Links will also be provided for graphically-rich documentation, readings and

follow-up resources.

Format: Presentation with high-impact images followed by a 15-20 minute Question

& Answer session.

Who Should Attend: Developers, community planners, architects, bankers,

realtors, elected leaders, landscape architects,20engineers, community leaders,

local regulators, tourism and economic development officials, the health

community and others who want to affect the shape and livability of their

communities.
