Thank you Yves.

Slowly the fog dissipates.........and I find myself lost in a forest ;-)

There's a difference between a patch and a performance (perf.).
A perf is a set of patches. You can find out about this in the
Performance guide.

For example, suppose that:
- Perf 1 in RAM 1 uses patches ## 1, 2, 3.
- Perf 19 in RAM 1 uses patches ## 1, 5, 6.
- Perf 21 in RAM 2 uses patches ## 1, 13, 24.

Altering patch #1 will change the sound of all of those performances.

Unfortunately, the Wavestation does not track which perfs
depend on a given patch; the musician has to do so, using pencil
and paper. :-)
It would have been nice if the GUI had listed these dependencies,
while editing
a patch, such as: "Patch #1 is used by: Perf 1-RAM 1; Perf 19-RAM
1; Perf 21-RAM 2."

For critical work, backup your patches, using sysex, before wiping
them out
with an unknown sysex dump.

For gigs or sound design without software (SDWS), you can delete
unneeded
patches, design there and then point the performances to those
locations.
I have done this for some sounds on RAM cards, in case the RAM card
is lost,
stolen or broken. You can even duplicate patches, to ensure that if
one is altered,
you have a back-up for that patch on your synth. There is enough
memory
on a WS to duplicate a few patches depending on how many patches
you need
to experiment with :-)
Basic programming states that one should always work with a copy,
never with the original.

I've figured out how to get sysex working using this great app:
http://www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/

And I've downloaded a load of brilliant patches from here: http://
www.seriously-productions.freeserve.co.uk/wavestation/

So thanks again for everyone who pointed me in the right direction.

BUT!

I've spent a while going through hooking patches out I like and
saving them across to RAM3. I thought this was working well until I
found when I loaded a new set of patches in, the ones I'd saved (I
have written down the names and numbers thankfully on paper) ended up
sounding different. Poking around i noticed they were cross-dependent
on files in RAM1 which had been usurped.

What procedure does the Wavestation take when one uploads sysex? Does
it write across all of the Banks, or just load into the first RAM
slot? Is there anyway I can gather up and *ring-fence* patches I like?

I have looked in the manual (RTFM) but it's not explicit on the
issue. Whatever help I could get in establishing a better proceedure
would be hugely appreciated.
