Recently I started replacing the screens on my synths with the new ones
with the LED backlight, and I can note see the point of going through
all the trouble and messing about with the old technology backlights,
when the new screens do away with invertors and all the reliability
issues.
So far I have done the replacement on TG77, K5000R and Wavestation A/D
and will be doing the same with K5m.
You have to know what you are doing and be able to make the ribbon
cables with the right connectors but the result is great and lasts much
longer than any of the old technology backlights.
On the subject of Wavestations A/D does anybody know what is the latest
version of the OS and how can one get a hold of the EPROMS?

Yes, you need to buy your backlight from Telesis. I can attest to the
greatness of the Telesis product. The screen for the AD is exactly the
same as the keyboard versions. I own the AD and used to own the EX. I
had to replace the backlight on that EX before I sold it and I bought
the backlight from Telesis. It worked marvelously! Too good really.
That screen was so bright it was almost unnatural. I think I paid some
$40 total for it back in the summer. Maybe shipping is more expensive
now I don't know, but I think the price should still be the same.
You need to know how to solder in order to install it and you have to
read those instructions VERY carefully, otherwise you can damage your
screen putting in the new light. It's not that difficult. Just a
tricky, delicate process. I can't solder so I got a friend to do it.
The screen is very easily accessible in the AD. There's almost nothing
inside that box. I've opened mine before. All that space is really
taken up with just circuit boards resting on the bottom. It's quite an
efficiently designed electronic machine, unlike the keyboard version
which is a whole nother story all together! That board's got several
layers of stuff to take out before you can get to the screen. Probably
because it has an actual keyboard.
Telesis gives you a CD with the instructions on how to do it. It's
pretty clear and straight forward too. Just survey the scene and don't
make any assumptions (like removing the old backlight, which you DON'T
do!). Telesis also sells used gear too, and they have some great prices
to boot! Perhaps I shouldn't give away the secret but I got a Roland
XV-5080 from them with 3 SR-JV cards expansion cards (orchestral, techno
and that sampler SR-JV99 card Roland made) for $750! No joke. Check
out Telesis. I got nothing but praise for those guys.

I am a long time WS experimenter. I'm glad there are people continuing

I have a Wavestation AD and am pondering the VSTi version at some point.
I've owned an EX and SR previously as well. I own a project room here
in sunny Milwaukee Wisconsin, USA where I record music and am branching
out into commercial work. I'm always interested in helping however
possible FWIW.
I do, unfortunately need to replace the LCD in my AD and am searching
for the part currently. I bought an LED backlit LCD, but I don't think
it's going to work due to the thickness and the AD's compact nature. If
anyone has any info on who still sells these, I'd be very grateful for
your insight. I want to use the AD on an upcoming session and hope to
have it happy again very soon.
