I wrote a few days ago to make sure you knew about the Collegiate Tour Baby!
http://www.collegiatetourbaby.com/
Several teams wrote in and are getting on board to help raise money for the
Davis Phinney Foundation and their own College Team. Others wrote in an
asked some questions. Here they are with the answers:
*How much could we raise for our team?*
The proceeds from each stop on the Tour will be distributed as follows: 50%
for the Davis Phinney Foundation, 25% for Collegiate Cycling (National
Program) and 25% back to the team or teams who step up and host a stage.
Typically, these events raise anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 each, so the
dollars direct to your team could range from $2500 to $7500. Larger events
/ stages could raise as much as $50,000 with your team recieving $12,500.
We are talking to national sponsors and when they come on board, the amounts
could be higher.
*What teams have already signed up?
*- University of Colorado - Boulder
- Colorado State University - Boulder
- U of Denver, Metro State, Mesa State (three schools working together)
- University of Kansas
- Lindenwood University
- Cumberland University
- University Georgia Athens
- University of Maryland (putting together their bid)
- University of Pittsburgh
- Marian College (might work with Indiana University)
- University of Wisconsin
- University of Oregon
- UC Berkeley
Plus Andrew Crooks, the owner of NYC Velo, a bike shop in the East Village
of New York (www.nycvelo.com) is interested in partnering with a New York
college cycling team to put on an event there.
*
How many more schools do you need?*
We need eight more schools! The whole concept is to go to 21 schools in 23
day, just like the Tour de France. We have mapped out a preliminary route
of cities / colleges that allow us to drive no more than six to eight hours
a day and cover the whole country. We are particularly interested in
coming to these cities, but will come to others cities if you want us and we
can work it into the logistical flow. Greenville SC, Ashville NC, New York
City or Philadelphia, Minneapolis or Saint Paul MN, Seattle WA, Portland OR,
Palo Alto CA, Sacramento CA, San Louis Obisbo CA, Santa Barbara CA, Los
Angeles CA, or San Diego CA.
*Is there still time for our school to get involved?*
Yes, there is still time. Just send me an email and let me know you are
interested and I will work with you to get things rolling. Get a head start
by downloading the two documents here: Download
Documents<http://www.collegiatetourbaby.com/hosting.html>.
And remember, you can partner with other schools to put your stage together!
*How much work will it take?*
Like all things worthwhile, they take effort. This is no exception. I make
it easy for you because I have done over 50 of these events raising over
$250,000 so far. Just like cycling, we take a team approach which makes it
easier and more fun. Here is an outline of the major steps / work:
1. You have to find a place that can hold between 200 and 2000 people
for the event on the date that we want to come to your town.
2. You have to reach out and get a local parkinson's community
coordinator and a local cycling community coordinator. These are non
college people who can mobilize the older people with deeper pockets to
attend your event
3. You have to put together a team to acquire silent auction items
which is as easy as just asking for the stuff
4. You have promote the event locally by getting the word out with
flyers and email. We will support you with web and masters for all your
materials.
5. You have to put a crew together to run the event that night.
Each team that steps up will be guided along the way by me. We have a
detailed "How to" guide that we will send you and we will have a series of
conference calls so we can all learn and work together to do something truly
amazing.
I look forward to having you with us,
Scott
