Hi Melinda,
great that you found your way to the WHEN list at Topica! I'll take the
opportunity to give you and other subscribers some background on WHEN,
the World Home Education Network.
1. WHEN at Topica (technical background)
Allow me to give some technical background about the Topica lists. The
advantage of these lists is that you can send and receive messages by
email as usual, and you can also read and post messages on the Web very
comfortably. All messages are kept in a public archive, so if you have
deleted a message on your computer and want to read it once more, it's
still there! Also, visitors can view the archive without having to sign
up first. Note that the archive tries not to show email addresses - this
is done to prevent that web-robots and spiders collect and sell them. If
messages are posted containing errors, let me know and I can delete
them. A further advantage of the Topica system is that you can select to
read messages on the WEB only, to avoid email overload! If you need any
help with settings, etc, let me know!
2. WHEN site update!
Much information about WHEN is available at the WHEN site at the
Optionality Network. For those who haven't visited this WHEN site for a
while, the site has been updated and features numerous links to sites
and articles on home education. Also, the homepage features some useful
facilities:
- Visitors can join the WHEN email list at Topica;
- Visitors can obtain a free WHEN email address;
- Visitors can add links to their sites at various places;
- Visitors can join WHEN at PlanetAll (see below).

3. WHEN at PlanetAll
Great also that you signed up with PlanetAll, Melinda, that is a great
way for WHEN-members to keep contact details up to date! I invite
everyone interested in home education to join! Note that the WHEN site
features two links to PlanetAll, one to view the WHEN group and another
to join the WHEN group! Somehow, many people sign up with PlanetAll and
link to me or other WHEN-members, but they do not join the WHEN group.
No worries, of course, but if you do join WHEN, you'll be more visible
for visitors who are looking for other home education contacts. Note
that at PlanetAll you can allow other people to view your email address.
If you are concerned about receiving unsollicited mail, I recommend that
you disallow this feature or that you sign up using a separate free
email account. Let me know if you need any help!
4. Post a message!
I hereby invite all members to post a message. Just click on the 'reply'
button of your email program, enter some words and click on the 'send'
button! If you like, give some details about yourself, some background,
perhaps you have questions, ideas, comments or suggestions. You are
welcome to do so, that's what the list is for!
5. Unsubscribe info
If you ever wanted to unsubscribe, just send an empty email to
when-uns-@topica.com and you'll automatically be taken off the
list. Note that if you are viewing this post on the web, the email
address will be scrambled, the correct one can be found at the WHEN list
info page at:
