Bikes at Vienna seems to be selling a fair number of the crank forward Rans
bikes. I have talked to a couple of people on the W & OD who ride the crank
forward bikes, and their response was very positive. The geometry must work
or they would not be selling. I do not have any experience with them,
however. Component wise, they look fine to me. I still ride my Bentechs,
short and long wheel base, and occasionally ride the Tailwind, which is the
least stable of my three bikes - way too much weight on the rear end,
combined with a 20-inch wheel.

i commute on my tour easy(s) on the capital crescent, but there are a couple
of guys commuting on rans crank forward bikes on the path. we often talk on
the ride in or out, and they really love their bikes. they're certainly in
no hurry (hey, we are talking about going to work), and i'm not sure how
fast they could go if they wanted to -- those bikes seem inherently a little
slower. when i've ridden them, it also does seem like a lot of weight on
the rear end, given the geometry of the bike. but the crank forward riders
on the path certainly have no problem commuting on them, and one of the guys
has well more than a year riding all weather every day. fwiw, jeff

I've been commuting to work here in Washington, DC (Chevy Chase Circle to
14th Street downtown) on a Rocket
and most recently a V-REX. It's 6.5 miles (mostly) downhill going in, same
distance mostly uphill going home.
I had total (left) knee replacement in October, 2008 and still can't get on
the V-REX. I simply don't have the range
of motion as my knee comes up in the stroke.
Back issues took me to 'bents, so a diamond frame is out of the question.
I've been thinking about a Crank Forward.
2 Questions:
- Are any of you riding a CF as a commuter bike? How is it?
- The low-end RANS seem to be very similar. What's the recommended one?
Thanks,
