Cerebellar Abiotrophy or Ataxia in the Scottish Terrier (Ataxia-Scotties) |
| Purpose: |
This is a discussion list for owners of Scottish Terriers who have received a clinical diagnosis of Cerebellar Abiotrophy (sometimes called Cerebellar Ataxia or CA) for their dog. Owners can feel free to discuss issues about the disease, provide/recieve support and share helpful tips for living with an affected dog. CA is a neurological disorder that causes incoordination and is known to affect the Scottish Terrier breed. Symptoms include general clumsiness, tripping and falling, or bunny-hopping. Dogs might exhibit a wandering gait, jerky or uncoordinated movements that never disappear once they begin at approximately 6 months of age. Some have reported signs earlier or later than that age. Mentation remains normal throughout the disease process and the personality is not affected. CA is slowly progressive, so a worsening of symptoms can be noticed over the years but many affected dogs manage to do well and can live out a full lifespan. No treatment is available at this time. |
