WHY FSD?
Since 1995, FSD has been a leader in providing hands-on international
development and cultural immersion experience to students and professionals.
Our programs supply the building blocks for establishing international
development careers, strengthening graduate school applications, fulfilling
practicum requirements, and cultivating professional relationships.
WHAT DO INTERNS AND VOLUNTEERS DO?
Our model places interns and volunteers individually with Community Based
Organizations (CBOs) in Latin America, Africa and Asia, matching the
participant's interests and skill sets with the needs of each organization.
All participants receive comprehensive development training, collaborative
project design and implementation experience, cultural immersion, and an
alumni network of support upon completion of the program.
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT:
Youth and Education in
Nicaragua<http://www.fsdinternational.org/country/nicaragua/yeissues>
Rebecca Brown, FSD Intern in Jinotepe, Nicarauga
Over the last 25 years, Nicaragua endured a revolution, civil war,
environmental disasters, and a president that embezzled over $100 million
from the people. This maelstrom of events left 50 percent of the country
below the poverty line and without sufficient employment, infrastructure,
health care, and education. Working with la Cooperativa de Desarrollo Social
Comunitario (CODESCO), a community center in Jinotepe, Nicaragua, Intern
Rebecca Brown identified the need for improved communication skills amongst
local women and youth. With funding from FSD, Rebecca and CODESCO designed
English learning programs that are now a permanent fixture at the community
center. FSD needs volunteers and interns who can collaborate with CODESCO to
supplement the English courses with other capacity building workshops like
computer training and small business development.

ALUMNI
Alumni of FSD internship and volunteer programs have won Rhodes, Fulbrights,
and other merit-based scholarships, gained employment with international
development organizations, pursued graduate degrees at the world's best
universities, and started their own development organizations.
"In 2007, I was blessed with the opportunity to work with Foundation for
Sustainable Development as an intern in Kakamega, Kenya. This experience
would prove to be the culmination of many international, service, and
leadership experiences; my pre-medical education at Miami University; and a
severe case of wanderlust. The months I spent in Kakamega cemented my
belief in the importance of sustainability in development work and matured
my understanding of community-led initiatives. I returned from Kenya to
finish my senior year at Miami and began applying to medical school. With
credit to my FSD experience, I was able to see this goal come to fruition
the past few months with acceptance into several programs.
The Foundation for Sustainable Development has had a profound impact on my
own life... my successful experience in Kakamega is testament to their
ability to translate the FSD mission of sustainability and community-focus
into pragmatic, realistic action. "
*- Morgan Smith, FSD Intern, Kakamega, Kenya*
PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS
"Many of our local organizations are small and do not have international
support. But it is the small organizations that know what is needed. FSD
understands this. Their support reaches the heart of our community and plays
a critical role in our long-term development."
