Where are they now? FSD Alumni are utilizing their experience in the field
to build a career in International Development.
* Spotlight on alumna Elana Western:
*As Development Coordinator for UNICEF, former FSD Intern Elana Western has
coordinated events that have raised over $337,000 to benefit UNICEF’s
programs for children in Rwanda. Prior to joining UNICEF, Elana was part of
FSD's team in La Plata, Argentina where she worked with a women's sewing

empowering women and supporting families to promote education and skills
training to help break the poverty cycle." After completing the FSD

WHY FSD?
Since 1995, FSD has been a leader in providing hands-on International
Development and cultural immersion experience to students and professionals.
Our programs supply the building blocks for establishing International
Development careers, strengthening graduate school applications, fulfilling
practicum requirements, and cultivating professional relationships.
WHAT DO INTERNS AND VOLUNTEERS DO?
Our model places interns and volunteers individually with Community Based
Organizations (CBOs) in Latin America, Africa and Asia, matching the
participant's interests and skill sets with the needs of each organization.
All participants receive comprehensive development training, collaborative
project design and implementation experience, cultural immersion, and an
alumni network of support upon completion of the program.
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT:
Environmental Initiatives and Income Generating Activities in
Kenya<http://www.fsdinternational.org/devsubject/environment/kenya>
*Jamie Pottern, FSD Intern in Kakamega, Kenya*
The environment is an increasingly pressing issue in Kenya as those living
below the poverty line rely heavily on agriculture for sustenance. With only
8 percent of the land capable of being cultivated for crops and 75 percent
of the Kenyan workforce engaged in agriculture, Kenyan farmers face growing
problems of soil erosion, deforestation, water pollution, and
desertification. In Kakamega, Kenya these issues are widespread. In
response, Jamie Pottern in collaboration with the Kakamega Environmental
Education Programme (KEEP), compiled a report to highlight the major
challenges that need to be addressed to prevent further degradation of the
Kakamega Rainforest. Additionally, Jamie identified small business
opportunities to provide community members with more sustainable means to
generate income and improve living standards. FSD needs volunteers and
interns who can collaborate with KEEP to continue implementing innovative
strategies that combat environmental issues and support the growth of
sustainable small business initiatives.

ALUMNI
Alumni of FSD internship and volunteer programs have won Rhodes, Fulbrights,
and other merit-based scholarships, gained employment with international
development organizations, pursued graduate degrees at the world's best
universities, and started their own development organizations.
"As a young professional looking for a career change, FSD enabled me to
spend time in a medical setting in Kenya, practicing public health
techniques, basic nursing care, and learning a host of skills that I still
use today in my public health and nursing life. By introducing me to
incredible people (teachers, nurses, mothers) in Kenya, by supporting me
personally and professionally, and by creating and implementing a structured
process that allowed me to volunteer successfully and purposefully, FSD
truly changed my path."
*- Elizabeth Cretti, FSD Intern, Kakamega, Kenya*
PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS
"Many of our local organizations are small and do not have international
support. But it is the small organizations that know what is needed. FSD
understands this. Their support reaches the heart of our community and plays
a critical role in our long-term development."
