What's the Secret?

Have you heard about that Internet movie, “The Secret?”
To the best of my recollection, it came out about March
of last year. It was very innovative and creative idea
because instead of trying to get the movie into theatres,
the producers put it out as a movie on the Internet. I
think for something like 6 bucks you could watch it one
time right on your computer screen and for $20 bucks they
would mail you a CD of the movie that you could watch at
home. Very creative thinking, I thought.
It’s a great movie, featuring a lot of people I know
personally, and respect — mainly, folks who deal with
“The Law of Attraction.” As most of you know, I, myself,
have a book that I wrote called, “The Universal “Spiritual”
Law of Attraction” that is still available on my website.
I love studying everything there is about the law of attraction.
This movie, The Secret, has really gained a lot of notoriety.
It was featured on Oprah, and Larry King as well as other
television shows throughout the US. The other night I was
watching a television show called, “The Millionaire Maker”
or something like that, and one of the panel host was a
woman who was featured in the movie, The Secret.
This got me to thinking…do you realize that all this
“self development” stuff that is out there—all come
directly from the Bible? All of it. For real. I found
myself laughing at the name of the movie, “The Secret.”
How is it a SECRET? It’s NO SECRET. How long has the
bible been around? I am willing to bet that almost
every single person reading this email has a bible
some place close by them—in their home, in their car,
in their apartment. And I may be wrong, but I don’t
believe there are too many people who haven’t at least
SEEN a bible who are living in the US (I can’t be too
sure about other countries). Since all of this self
development stuff is taken from the Bible, and since
the bible has been out for thousands of years and
since almost everyone has a bible in their home—what’s
the freaking Secret?
Oh, but wait a minute, Dawn—I don’t remember reading
anything about self-development in the Bible! HELLO!!
The entire bible is nothing but how to develop oneself.
OK. Let me point out the basic Self Development ideas
and show you exactly where it came from in the bible.
Just to make it as simple as possible, I am only going
to focus on the story of Abraham. I believe there is
enough information in the book of Genesis, starting with
Chapter 12, to cover the entire self development industry.
The first thing that God said to Abram (that was his name
originally before God changed it to Abraham), was “leave
your country, your people and your father’s household, and
go to a land I will show you.”
The reason God asked him to leave his familiar surroundings
is because he didn’t want outside influence on the things
that he was going to be doing for Abram. Doesn’t it sound
familiar—you decide to make changes in your life, develop
yourself, stop doing the things you once did—start a new
business, write a book, become a famous singer. And who are
the people that always stop you first with their negative
opinions about the matter—the people in your household. Your
mother will tell you, “boy, you know you can’t do that. Go
to college, get a degree and get a job. Stop thinking about
starting your own business. It will never work” Or your
friends saying, “how in the world are you going to do that.
You can’t even…”
Not that they intentionally are trying to hurt you.
In fact, they think they are doing the opposite. They
truly believe in their heart of hearts that they are
trying to stop you from experiencing disappointment.
But the reality is, they are stopping you from stepping
out on faith and perhaps making the best decisions you’ve
ever made or will make in your life.
The first thing God told him to do was to get away
from the people who may be influential in holding
him back.
The next thing they Self Development Guru’s tell you
is that you are never too old for change. Well, Abram
was 75 years old when God told him to leave his household
and go to the land he would show hi. Now, who is with
me with I say he should have BEEN out of his fathers
house by 75. What’s wrong with that picture? 75 years
old and your still living with your folks--you AND your
wife. Anyway, I digress.
But Abram listened to God and stepped out on faith.
He took his belongings and moved where God asked him
to move. This is what we have to do when we make the
decision to start something big. Nike says it best—
JUST DO IT. I know it may seem scary and uncertain at
first. And I’m sure Abram felt scared and uncertain too.
After living with your folks for 75 years, I can imagine
what a big change like that must appear to be like. But
faith is doing it anyway and trusting that it will all
work out right.
As soon as Abram gets to the land--there is famine in
the land. Now ain’t that how it always happens? You make
the decision to step out on faith, and the devil comes
and hits you will all types of trails and tribulations.
But Abram didn’t allow that to stop him. He stood strong
in his faith and he became wealthy with livestock, silver
and gold. In fact, his nephew was with him and they had
so much stuff that they had to go separate ways cause the
area they lived in wasn’t big enough to hold all the stuff
they possessed.
The next thing God did was give Abram a vision. He told
him to look around and see all the land. He promised him
that he would give the land to Abram and all of his
offspring’s. God said he would give Abram as many offspring’s
as there is dust in the land (now that’s a lot of offspring’s.)
But just like most of us, Abram didn’t quite understand
God’s words either. So he went to God and asked if he
could have a son, someone he could leave his great inheritance
too. Abram was upset cause he didn’t want to have to leave
all of his possessions to his servant. But God told him not
to worry and again, he gave him a vision. God took Abram
outside and told him to look at the stars in the sky. God
told Abram that his descendants will be more than the number
of stars in the sky. And Abram held on to that vision.
Don’t most Self Development courses teach you the
importance of visualization? This is where they get
it from. You have to see it first, in your minds eye,
before it manifests in the natural/material world.
After God gave him the word, it didn’t happen right away.
Because it didn’t happen, Sarai, Abram’s wife, decided
that perhaps they should do something to make it happen.
Isn’t that just how we work—it doesn’t seem like what we
are asking God for is happening fast enough for us so we
take matters into our own hands and mess it up completely.
Well, that’s exactly what Sarai did. She suggested that
Abram make a baby with her servant. Abram agreed. I don’t
know about you, but to me, this had all the makings of a
disastrous situation from the start. You gonna sleep with
your wife’s servant and have a baby and everything is suppose
to be alright? What was Sarai smoking? That one mistake
has cost so much.
Anyway, the next thing God did was change Abram’s name
from Abram to Abraham. Abraham means “I am the father of
many nations.”
Therefore, every time Abram walked up to someone and
gave his name, he was saying, “I am the father of many
nations.” Even though he didn’t have but one child.
Isn’t this what Self Development courses teach? It’s called
“affirmations.” Speak the words as if they are
already so, so they may manifest in your life.
Now, Abram was 99 years old when God changed his name
from Abram to Abraham. Therefore, everyone who already
knew him, knew him as Abram. So, every time he ran into
a friend or family member, when they would say, “Yo,
what’s up Abram?” he would have to correct them and say
My name is I am the father of many nations. Now, that’s
an affirmation. You also know his friends and family must
have been laughing at him. “Look Abraham or whatever you
say your name is, your 100 years old. You HAVE NO
CHILDREN MAN.” But he stuck with his affirmation, “call me,
I am the father of many nations.”
You know how the story ends—Abraham becomes the father
of many nations, just as he held his faith to believe.
There are tons of examples of things that we call
“The Secret” or “Self-Development” that is taken
directly out of the bible. I challenge you today
to go through the bible and find how many self development
principles you stumble upon. All of them are in there.
I’d end up writing a book if I tried to point them all
out to you. Perhaps one day I will write a book on that
very same subject. Hmmm…..

That’s it for this week, folks.
Have a blessed and wonderful week. Be sure to check out
the web site at www.dawnfields.com.
Oh, and some of you have sent me emails asking me about
how Erica and Eli have been because it has been brought
to my attention that I haven’t talked about them lately.
Well, they are doing fabulously well. Erica just turned
9 years old the other week, and Eli will be 8 by the end
of this month. They are still in school but should be out
in a few weeks. Summer is almost here. I’m trying to figure
out a way to keep them occupied all summer. AAGGUUUGGHHH.
That’s always a challenged. But thanks to you that asked.
Take care and God bless!
