Mustard Seed Faith

Every time I hear someone talk about having faith, especially
Christians, they are quick to quote what Jesus said in Matthew 17:20.
"He replied, "...I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a
mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there'
and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
"Girl, Jesus said all you need was a little faith--as small as a mustard
seed. Your mountains will be moved."
You heard that too, now didn't you? I know you did. I'm not the only
one. People all quick to point out that all you need is faith the size
of a mustard seed.
Now, I don't know about you, but this just didn't make any sense to me.
You mean to tell me that if I have a little bitty faith, I could tell a
mountain to move and it would?
Then how come these mountains in my life ain't moving? I got little
bitty faith. Most people I know have little bitty faith, but for some
reason they can't move grass, let alone a mountain.
And I'm willing to bet that all these people who keep telling me that
all I need is a little faith, the size of a mustard seed--they ain't
moving any mountains in their life either.
How about you? Did you ever notice "little bit of faith" moving
mountains in YOUR life?
With only a little bit of faith, the mountains seem to start taking OVER
my life--not disappearing. With a little bit of faith, I didn't see
ANYTHING changing.
So, I started trying to figure out just what Jesus meant when He said,
faith "as small as a mustard seed". He had to mean something, right? I
mean, it IS in the bible. He did say it. And his words are truth. Right?
The first thing I did was go to that verse in the bible. Do you know the
first thing I noticed was the sentence which starts this verse actually
begins like "Because you have so little faith..."
If you go back and read the story relating to this verse, you will
discover that there was a boy who was demon possessed. The demon was
actually trying to kill this boy by throwing him in the water and doing
all sorts of crazy stuff to this kid. The boy's father had taken him to
the disciples, who had prayed, in the name of Jesus, that the demon be
removed. But nothing happened.
So, the father brought his demon-possessed, son to Jesus and told Jesus
that Jesus' disciples had already prayed for the boy, but the demon did
not leave him.
AND HERE IS WHERE THE "RUMOR" IS DISPELLED--THE RUMOR THAT ALL YOU NEED
IS A LITTLE BIT OF FAITH TO MOVE MOUNTAINS.
Jesus got a bit pissed. Yeah, he did. He chumped them (his disciples)
off right in front of the crowd. He said to the disciples "You
unbelieving perverse generation. How long do I have to stay and put up
with you?"
And then he rebuked the demon and it came out the boy--INSTANTLY!!!
Well, the disciples couldn't figure out why they weren't able to do it
and that is when Jesus says, "because you have so little faith."
If you go back and look at all the situations in the bible where Jesus
rebuked a person because of their faith, he is always complaining about
their "little faith." There is never a situation where he is big upping
someone for their "little faith."
So, why would he then, turn around and say that all you need is faith
the size of a mustard seed to move mountains?
Didn't make sense to me either. So, I looked up mustard seed on the
Internet.
What exactly is a mustard seed and how come, out of all the seeds in the
world, Jesus would compare faith to a mustard seed? Why not some other
seed? Why mustard? (Hey, ever wonder if there is a ketchup seed? OK.
Just joking. Sorry, that was corny.)
Now, although having some of the smallest seeds, the mustard plant grows
to an extremely large size. Jesus wasn't telling us to have little bitty
faith. He was telling us that if the seed is planted, and we water it
and water it--our faith can develop like a mustard seed--and grow into
something grand.
Mustard seed faith isn't little tiny faith--it's faith that grows into
something grand.
You want to move mountains in your life? Develop your faith "like that
of a mustard seed."

Well, that's it for this week, Folks!
For those of you in the US...have a safe and wonderful Labor Day
weekend.
I can't believe summer is over already. But I am sooooo ready for school
to start. Erica and Eli can't wait for school to start either. Yeah, my
kids are a bit weird like that--they didn't want school to end, and now
they can't wait to get back to school. Go figure!
Some of my family and friends in PA and NC's children are already back
in school. Good for them. I'm just tired of trying to find activities to
keep them busy. When school starts, that's always less work for
me--school keeps them entertained.
Well, as always, I'm here for you. Drop me a note to say HELLO or if you
are struggling with your faith or even your purpose, send me an email. I
would love to hear from you and to help you in way that I can.
Oh, I must tell you guys that my email abby isn't working properly and I
can't seem to get it fixed. You can still send me emails at
da-@dawnfields.com but for some reason I can not REPLY from that email
address. So, feel free to send me emails to spirit-@aim.com until I
am able to get my emails up and running properly. Thanks for
understanding.
Have a blessed and wonderful day!
